The Competence and Training Requirements of the Working Environment Specialist

The specialist must be competent in the working environment, has passed a corresponding training and is familiar with legal acts regulating the working environment. Special training for working environment specialists is offered for example by the Tallinn University of Technology.

The specialist must go through follow-up training at least once in five years. These trainings often introduce changes in relevant legal acts, but the content and duration of the training should be chosen by the specialist in cooperation with the employer, emanating from the occupational requirements.

Before five years have passed, follow-up training might be necessary if the working environment legislation related to the company’s activities has changed considerably, great technological changes are made at the workplace, or if this is seen as important by the company’s labour inspector, working environment representative or the working environment council. For instance, the preschedule follow-up training on working environment could be important for a working environment specialist of a construction company after the regulation “Occupational Health Care and Safety Requirements in the Field of Construction” is amended, or to a specialist of an industrial company prior to the application of new lifting devices.
