Protective Glasses against Volatile Particles

Protective glasses are meant to protect the eyes of the user, not to please the manager or salesmen, nor to decrease the work of eye surgeons.

Which protective glasses to choose shall become clear when to think through all works and procedures that might harm the employees. Eye protection must certainly be worn at tasks that may injure the eyes or the face. The minimum list where wearing eye protection is mandatory is as follows:

  • welding, forging, sanding, drilling, turning, milling;
  • handling liquid substances (incl. plastic and glass industry) or      working the vicinity;
  • rock processing and explosive works;
  • working with an energized screwdriver or wrench (including also the battery-powered drill);
  • working with a nailgun;
  • spraying abrasive substances and liquids (also including, for      example, sand and natron blaster works, gunite device, filler or gun      works; work with construction foams, etc.);
  • working with acids, alkali, disinfectants or anti-rust agents, and      plant protection work;
  • work with direct heat radiation; working with a laser.

When looking at the pictures below and think about your works and activities, first conclusions can be made about the purpose of protective equipment.

When looking at the pictures and think about your works and activities, first choices can be made about the protective equipment. Illustrations clearly show the efficiency of different eye protection equipment. In all cases, the paint was sprayed from a distance of 0.5 metres and for 4-5 seconds. Images show – from left to right: prescription glasses, most popular protection glasses and goggles. Results range from eyes that were protected from the worst up to completely shielded visual organs.

Eye protection devices can broadly be divided into three:

  • Protection glasses nowadays have light polycarbonate      glasses. In the case of some models, it is possible to lengthen or shorten      the edge of the glasses and the temples, providing a great opportunity to      fit the protection glasses with different face shapes or according to need.

Many of the contemporary protection glasses are equipped with the UV-filter. It is recommended to choose scratch-proof glasses with anti-fog layer.

  • Goggles have the best protective properties and a good design. They offer a      wide and open field of view; the plastic rubber edge increases the comfort      of usability and keeps the goggles tight against the face. Goggles have      the perfect size and fit over the regular prescription glasses without      making the user feel clumsy or uncomfortable.
  • Visor or protection mask is a transparent mask protecting either half or      the entire face. Depending on the purpose, it is manufactured either from      fine metal net or polycarbonate

Protection masks usually consist of adjustable head carcass and, if required, forehead impact protection. Some sets are equipped with headphones (e.g. working without a helmet when trimming the lawn). Some visors are for use together with a helmet (connectable).

All used vision protection equipment must correspond to the standard EN 166.

Choice

The choice of protection glasses is so wide that anyone who wishes to protect their eyes should find the most suitable solution. When choosing glasses it could be useful to know that the glass (and the frame) of protection glasses bear a number combination, characterizing the properties of the specific glasses. Impact resistance is probably the most important one. The table below gives an overview of just that.

The chosen protection glasses must be suitable for the shape of the face. Protection glasses are not just worn – it is not a fashionable accessory, worn just to be cool. Some people have a wider, others a leaner face; some need longer, others shorter temples. Protection glasses must fit perfectly and not hinder doing work.

Some models enable to change the tilting of glasses in relation to the face in order to guarantee optimum protection in any circumstances. Such models usually also enable to adjust the length of the temples.

When protective glasses must be worn all day long together with headphones, it is recommended to choose glasses with straight temples that do not bend around the ears. This way, the pressure by the headphones will not irritate. It is important to use protective glasses also for work that seems sage and in cases when the glasses might become foggy during work (e.g., in summer). For people wearing the prescription glasses, goggle-like protection glasses have been designed that can be worn over the optical glasses. The most convenient solution is the visor or half-mask, covering the prescription glasses and shielding them from breaking.

Use

If wearing the protective glasses is not mandatory during the entire workday, glasses must still be worn during such tasks which generate dust or a hazard of foreign particles flying into the eyes; also during works involving electric or pneumatic tools (e.g. disc cutter, circular saw, electric drill, etc.). Protective glasses must also be worn when handling dangerous chemicals or in the case something could hit the eye and trigger an injury.

When glasses become dirty or dusty, choose a safe place for removing and cleaning them. Even though the cleaning process does not take much time, the workplace hazards could injure the eyes. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions when cleaning the glasses. Depending on the extent of soiling, use either warm water or a special cleaning agent and a cleaning cloth.

Protective glasses do not last forever. If glasses get scratched or damaged or if the frames get damaged, the protective glasses should be replaced.
